Boldon Colliery Heritage Group

Boldon Colliery Heritage Group was formed with the aim of preserving the proud mining and military history and heritage of the people of this great village.

Our mission is to raise funds so that we can build a memorial that properly represents our proud mining heritage, and that also pays tribute to all those from Boldon Colliery who fought for the cause of freedom, and in service of their country.

Our primary objective has been to raise money to construct an appropriate memorial for the people who worked at Boldon Colliery pit during its 116 year existence and also those from the village who have served in our armed forces, so that for many years to come their memory will live on and their service and achievements can be recognised and respected by future generations.

The restoration of the original Boldon Colliery clock – which was gifted to the people of Boldon in the 1956 as a memorial to those who lost their lives in World War I & II – took place in 2021 after the group secured funding thanks to help from our Labour ward councillors, and this will take pride of place on our memorial, ensuring that an important part of local history will live on as part of this new tribute to our past, present and future.

The memorial will be a place for us all to come together and remember those that came before us, and represented our great village, both on the coalface and in our military.

As well as serving as a constant reminder to our community, Boldon Colliery Heritage Group aims to work within the community – through our service of remembrance which takes place each year, and through our local history sessions with local primary schools and community groups – so that the legacy of this memorial and the work that has gone in to putting this in place can carry on for many years more.

Boldon people are proud people, so our aim is to do our people proud.

We want to bring together the community as one, and put us on the map – both for the people of today, and for future generations.

We have already raised around £25,000 ourselves from fundraising within the community over the last few years, but we understand that in order to achieve what we need to achieve that we’ll need additional support to reach our objective.
